Perry,

the computer industry needs consolidation and HWP/CPQ is a step in that direction

Mergers disrupt business operations for quite a long time. Bay Networks never recovered from the merger of Synoptics and Wellfleet (and having consulted there, I can tell you that the "us" versus "them" mentality was prevalent, especially among senior execs, years later).

Why is consolidation needed? Why not just let CPQ slide into oblivion and pick up the business after that happens? I would certainly agree that there need to be fewer players, but consolidation is only one way to make that happen. Put another way, if CPQ is such a good deal, why isn't Dell or Gateway bidding for them as well? Maybe they know something Carly doesn't.

Personally, I'd rather see HP take the billions they were planning on using to buy CPQ, and spend it instead on 50 or 100 small companies with exciting ideas and products for which HP could provide tremendous leverage. They need to focus on new businesses, not old, stagnating businesses.
