First, I was referring to the phrase "significant event". Sure, it is the most significant event in the young life up to that point, but that has no bearing on whether the being was human before it occurred. Second, there is no reason to surrender societal interests to the individual woman. We do not allow her to say that the neonate is not (in your terms) self- conscious, and therefore is disposable. It is, finally, not up to her, if society recognizes an interest in regulating it........
