Hi Win-Lose-Draw,

IMHO, you have turned your attention to the precious metals sector at the right time. I don't know of any XAU-like ETF or tracking stock, but I trade Rydex's RYPMX fund as a proxy for XAU. With my money directly at Rydex, I can trade every day if want at no extra cost, so the only drawback is that I can only trade at the end of the day. Not all mining stocks are the same and it is better to own a basket of them. Also, not all precious metal funds are the same.

Take a look at this chart and then change the "time" to "all data" to see what an historic bottom this is and how wild rallies are once they get going.
