The news that Nokia had an upside surprise in its new, high-end phone sales may be directly related to AMD:

"To introduce the most advanced solutions for its high-end phones, Nokia works closely with many suppliers in its product development. AMD is the first supplier to meet Nokia's Flash memory requirements to address the high data rates of next generation cellular phones such as GPRS, EDGE and 3G. AMD's exceptionally fast 32 Mbit and 64 Mbit products enable us to provide the most advanced cellular solutions in the market."

Nokia expects to meet or exceed fourth quarter sales target
Dec 11, 2001 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) -- Finland's Nokia reports that it expects the whole group's net sales growth in the fourth quarter of the current year to be approximately 20% higher than in the previous three-month period.

The fourth quarter sales of the group's Nokia Networks unit are also expected to go up compared with the third quarter but to decrease 20% year-on-year while the sales of the Nokia Mobile Phones unit are predicted to rise 25% from the third quarter. Nokia says that all of the estimates that it has given now are in line with its earlier guidance.

The company notes that the mobile phone market has developed to its expectations, with total fourth quarter sales volumes expected to reach 105-110m units. Nokia believes that it will continue to increase its market share during the current quarter, partly because its channel inventories are back to normal and because of record unit sales in October and November.

The company is especially pleased with the sales of its new Nokia 8310 mobile phone model and with sales in the US.

"Why? AMD appears sold out of 1600+ and 1700+ (this has been reported several times from various sources)."

Because AMD aeems to produce less chips than they are capable of, even from Fab30. Although Paul's 27% is total nonsense, the volume seems like it should be higher than it is. If Fab30 can produce some 50 million processors per year on 0.13 micron, then it should've been able to do 12-13 million this year because of the ramp. It will actually produce closer to 10 million.
