Chartered Says Factories Will Be Busier Than Expected (Update2)
By Linus Chua

Singapore, Dec. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd., the third-largest maker of chips for other companies, said its factories were busier than expected as business stabilized after a one-year slump.

The company said in a Business Wire release it expects to use a quarter of production equipment for the three months ended Dec. 31, after earlier predicting that may drop to a fifth. It reiterated an October estimate of a fourth-quarter loss of 95 cents to 97 cents on each American depositary receipt.

Chartered is starting to benefit from stronger-than-expected holiday-season buying of computers and other gadgets in the U.S. Some investors say the company has been hit harder than its two bigger rivals, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Corp., and may not recover as strongly.
