Gartner warns customers off HP/Compaq products

Haggle over prices, suits advise
By Mike Magee, 12/12/2001 11:32:25 BST

THE UNCERTAINTY HANGING over the proposed legover of Compaq by Hewlett Packard has led market research company Gartner to issue a note saying large corporations should be careful which kit they buy.
In the note, analysts at the Gartner Group say they are concerned that top management at both Q and HP will find their attention "seriously distracted" from selling kit.

And efforts to do so mean that both firms could suffer depredations from competitors taking advantage of weaknesses because of the moves.

So Gartner is cautioning that corporations can buy products and upgrades tactically, but customers should restrict strategic buys to HP printers, Proliant servers, HP/UX servers, Compaq Storageworks and HP XP storage at the high end.

Corporations don't need to worry about PC or PDA buys or services from either company.

But they do say that the current circumstances mean that in Q1 of next year, there will be "opportunities for negotiation leverage".

We think this means haggling the price of products down.

Sales people at HP and Compaq must just love Gartner for these helpful comments. . µ
