SELL rating? Comverse Tech (CMVT) 21.94: -- Update -- A case of dueling analysts following CMVT earnings report. Following a Morgan Stanley upgrade this morning (see 7:37), Merrill Lynch out with note downgrading CMVT to near-term REDUCE/SELL from Neutral. While numbers were in line, co continued to experience declines in deferred revs and backlog. Co's new 2002 guidance of $0.60 is well below the expected $0.80-$0.85 level; Merrill's new model suggests even lower EPS of $0.48. Using management's guidance of $0.32 from ops, firm arrives at $13 value for the shares.

Comverse Tech (CMVT) 21.94: Morgan Stanley upgrades to OUTPERFORM from Neutral, based on the sequential stabilization in orders and guidance for sequential stability in backlog into Jan.
