Repeated failures are part of the nature of scientific discovery. Why do these people seem surprised? Quite frequently, the course of experimentation has not provided the intended result, but rather, a side effect, that when noticed, leads to entirely new fields of research and discovery. Serendipity plays a large part in the process; astute observation plays an even larger part. Perseverance is the headline actor on the stage.
