Well, if kept in context Christmas is a fine idea. However, I guess as a nation our premise was separation of church and state. Unfortunately, we were a totally Christian nation when that premise was put forth, thus all other religious beliefs were not really considered. In recent times since our society is becoming more and more diverse it becomes obvious that pushing Christianity in everyone's face may not be appropriate. Thus some folks apparently Simms being one trying to be progressive sees the predjudice in such acts. When woman weren't people in the 1920's the same cries were heard and when blacks weren't people in the early 50's the same cries were heard from the likes of folks like you. Thus over time more and more places will stop outright displays of christianity in defference to other religions which make up a greater percentage of the world's population. So I suggest you get used to it. Just my thoughts from a progressive viewpoint.

re:Democrat Ron Simms (mayor of Seattle) has issued an edict forbidding the utterance by employees of "Merry Christmas" in the interests of "diversity".

First of all, Ron Sims is not mayor of Seattle he is county executive. Secondly he did not "edict" anything, he just suggests other "religious-neutral" words may be more appropriate. Most people and merchants where I live have been using the phrase, "Have a good or a nice holiday" or "enjoy the holidays" for many years now. The very large company I worked for disallowed religious decorations at least 20 years ago in deference to the many religions of people employed there. People do say Merry Christmas to people they know are Christian but even among Christians, "Happy Holiday" is common. So relax, no one's trying to take your religion away.

Heres the Seattle Times take on the story.....
