You've probably nailed it. In order to get the design win from AMD, Intel had to have offered much more than simply undercutting them in price. Take a look at Tenchusatsu's earlier post. He lists a number of reasons why Microsoft would choose Intel over AMD.

Besides, I think that Microsoft's decision to go with Intel over AMD is the crux of this argument - not some measly dispute over the definition of "last minute".
