All the government housing projects and lack of home ownership combined with many absentee landlords certainly did not help Newark's beauty.... But I was relatively lucky, living not too far from the Belleville border near Branch Brook Park's numerous cherry blossom trees. Used to hang out with some tough guys down near Broad St. in the mid-1960's when I went through my James Dean leather jacket greaser phase.... Some of those guys were a little nuts, but one of my buddies and I fixed up a 1960 Buick convertible and went cruising for the opposite sex. (don't tell anybody, but in those politically incorrect days we sometimes called them broads, which was a term of endearment) <g>
