Putin is against the withdrawl. So I guess Bush agrees with Safire. I think Russia has a lot of files on terrorists, and they should fork them over. Also, we need some accountability on their nuclear missiles, etc. They have been helpful so far. Let's hope the trend continues, but caution is warranted, as Safire wisely points out.

Excellent follow up article, reviewing your posted Safire article: Is the Cold War 'over'?

Well we have all the words of all that negative stuff that is going to happen like years to win in Afghanistan and all the American deaths and and.

What has happened. The President has withdrawn from the ABM and the world is not jumping up and down. No political noise or upset. The bottle is open. Everything else is still to be decided.

American voters find those who whine six months or a year after the event as whimps. No reduction in missiles has occurred and Russia has no influence in NATO and America is and did use whatever to destroy binnie and the tallies. Allowing the Russians to put people in Afghanistan has what value to the Russians other than to save face. What strategic value????

Who is eating who's lunch. Will Americans believe the President??? Well I will.

It is good for conservative's to create talking points for vacant liberal minds that can then make them look foolish.
