Israel takes action on militant attacks

Israel has launched a swift military retaliation against Palestinian territories.

Palestinian militants earlier killed 10 Israelis and wounded about 30 in a double attack on Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Israeli F-16s bombed a Palestinian security compound in Gaza at least three times, witnesses said.

In Nablus, another F-16 shelled a helicopter pad in a compound belonging to Force 17, an elite Palestinian security unit, and also hit the local headquarters of Palestinian naval police.

In Gaza City, Palestinian security workers ran from buildings near the one that had been hit, filling the streets nearby moments after the attack.

No injuries have been immediately reported in either strike.

Electricity in Gaza City had been cut off earlier to darken the area in anticipation of Israeli strikes.

The security building there was near one of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compounds, but he is known to be in Ramallah, in the West Bank.

It is not clear exactly what the function of the attacked building was.
