i basically agree, however it is also true that this gap is part of the Longwave cycle of capitalist economies...it tends to widen in the down waves, and narrow in the up waves. but you are of course right that what counts in the end is the individual, and whether living standards have overall improved. as long as that's the case, the "concerns" over widening income gaps won't even be useful as political ammunition.
and there's a vast difference between 'equality by force', which is the socialist 'solution' and equality of opportunity, which is what works in terms of improving standards of living.
