Steve - The SSP model failed because it's business model was mostly geared to fast-growing companies that couldn't keep up with demand. Many of the dotcoms were doubling their storage quarterly, and the SSPs were the only business model that made sense for them. They could guarantee a fixed cost/MB for backed up, high availability storage.

Some SSPs certainly provide software services for remote backup and disaster recovery sites. However, there are a lot of established firms in this space, and if it was me, I'd go with one of the tried-and-true vendors rather than an SSP that had to reinvent itself to stay in business.

I can't comment on costs associated with this market segment, since I frankly don't care about the costs as it doesn't affect my job or investments one way or another ;)
