A book-to-bill of 0.73 means that $73 worth of new orders were received for every $100 of product shipped for the month. The three-month average of worldwide bookings in November 2001 was $612.3 million. The bookings figure is about 5 percent below the revised October 2001 level of $647.1 million and 77 percent below the $2.71 billion in orders posted in November 2000. The three-month average of worldwide billings in November 2001 was $842.2 million. The billings figure is approximately 6 percent below the revised October 2001 level of $896.7 million and 65 percent below the November 2000 billings level of $2.42 billion. "North American suppliers of manufacturing equipment for the semiconductor industry continue to see orders drop on a monthly basis, reflecting the decline in global electronics production, excessive amount of existing manufacturing capacity and curtailed investment by the world's chip makers," said Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. "Billings have continued to slide to levels not seen since early 1995. However, the rates of decline for both billings and orders have lessened in recent months compared to the steeper descent earlier in the year." The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average billings for the North American semiconductor equipment industry.
