But Frank Badillo, an economist at consultant firm Retail Forward, warned home-improvement sales could weaken after the holidays, as the impact of layoffs and salary freezes kicks in.

Badillo said rising unemployment could offset benefits of lower interest rates, resulting in softer housing market demand.

``By the first quarter we'll see slower growth in home improvement centers and may see some negative growth compared with a year ago in the second quarter,'' Badillo said.

He is far more right than he sees. When you have a slow down people do pay more attention to that which should of been done in the house they live in due to extended hours at home they see the flaws. If they get a new job the house becomes less important than the job so, then you have to wait for surplus of income to kick in again to add to a greater increase in home improvement sales.
