I've seen that happen to several people I know, too. Same story, slightly different details. As a general rule, people who are smart and successfull, have a tendency to overestimate their ability to predict and/or control the future. Precisely because of their intelligence and prior success, they are at risk of getting overextended, making overaggressive bets, forgetting about the tails of the BellShapedCurve. Male physicians are particularly prone to this.
