In the short run, yes. In the long run, Intel needs to keep AMD a minor player. Say below 20-25% overall market share.

If AMD starts controlling 1/3 of the market, Intel won't be able to dictate the direction and standards of the PC market. To some extent, its ability to do this has already deteriorated and it will only get worse, much worse, if AMD increases its market share.
