Good article and sound advice. Since networking two computers and changing to broadband I became somewhat paranoid about security. I had been running Zone Alarm Pro, after installing a NAT router I have had no incoming alerts from ZAP. However there is still the issue of trogans, spyware and the like. Ad Aware is excellent, also Pest Patrol, which I shall be registering. pestpatrol.co
Everyone should use Steve Gibsons site here
grc.com
download the free IP agent and test your setup. Many test sites do not identify your IP address correctly.

There is a lot of information out there, some of it more paranoid than I. The use of a host file is becoming popular and I am now looking at that.

The reason for my concern? I am an expat. living in Asia, I use my credit card a lot and also online banking and broker accounts. If anyone got hold of this I hate to think of the consequences. Just saying the chances are remote is not good enough. I want to do all I can to protect my privacy.

With many people now running small home networks and using cable or DSL with file and print sharing enabled the problems are going to get worse.

Sorry if this sounds like preaching. I have just returned from Australia, my daughters computer was so infected with virus and trogans we fdisked it. Her friends computer was the same. I know they won't follow my instructions and will wait for mum to come and fix them up next time.
