Siemens is to construct a series of mobile radio networks for the Indian cellular operator Bharti. Bharti Cellular, one of India's leading mobile operators, has awarded Siemens a contract to supply GSM and GPRS technology for setting up a number of mobile radio networks in India.

The first networks are scheduled to start operating as early as December 2001. Siemens will be equipping Bharti's mobile networks in the Calcutta and Madhya Pradesh regions with turnkey GSM radio and switching technology, microwave radio relay systems, and GPRS services. The order for mobile radio networks in the Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Gujarat regions includes the delivery of GSM technology, radio relay systems, and intelligent network services.
