You're exactly right. They know what he says is elementarily true even if they disagree about details. They have the attitude that unless they instill fear in the public about their extrapolated fears about the environment, the public will become complacent and bring about what is only potentially true, what is only imagined by them. They don't trust what they view as the inferior common man. They esteem themselves as the bearers of a truth that is so difficult to understand that only they can know it. Von Hayek referred to this as scientism. The world of science is so rife with it that it's hard to see how any progress is made. Another factor is that if the truth were to be known not as much funding would go into the myriad of pet projects. It's all about turf and who is important in the world.

despite the fact they are detracting from Lomborg's views, his ideas are getting press and will gain some acceptance when more closely viewed.

Kind of like the bonanza of press Bre-X got when it was exposed as a fraud?
