It also implies that the company driven out could not adapt and/or diversify, which indicates stagnation.

AMD was able to climb out with Athlon and survive. Cyrix didn't have anything close to Athlon or Pentium, so they crumbled.

It's called "survival of the fittest." If you want an alternative, try socialism or communism.
