The accidental president turns into true leader
(Filed: 29/11/2001)

War has been the making of George W Bush, as his country rallies round him, writes Stephen Robinson

THESE are early days and everyone knows the difficult bit lies ahead, but George W Bush is transforming himself in Americans' eyes from a barely legitimate accidental president into a formidable war leader.

US public opinion always rallies behind the commander-in-chief in times of international crisis, but this is not simply a case of Mr Bush benefiting from the surge of patriotism Osama bin Laden set off on September 11. Rather, his whole demeanour is actually changing in office.

In the early months of his presidency, White House aides panicked each time he had to speak off the cuff - he could be relied on to stray from the approved topic as well as mangle his words.

At a White House event on Monday, Mr Bush was fluent and confident, seeming to regard reporters' questions as an opportunity for a one-liner rather than as a potential trap.
