The strange thing is that bin Laden, his henchmen, and many of his operatives are upper and middle class--they did not live in poverty and desperation.

Nor were the September 11 highjackers driven to their acts by despair over their situation in Palestine. Not one was a Palestinian. Nor did poverty and despair produce John "the American Taliban" Walker Lindh.

I think it's time to re-think our traditional take on things, even though I know it's not PC to blame things on nationalism and religious zealotry rather than the more comfortable poverty and despair. (It's also scarier to admit this because we can do something about poverty--but what can we do about homicidal fanatical Islamic millionaires, and their well-heeled henchmen????).
