Should I get Windows XP Home Edition or Professional Edition?

Personally, I haven't encountered much of anything I wish I had Professional for. Home's good.

Should I get extra RAM?

It's so cheap these days, you should go for it.

It's a good idea to have at least 256 meg, but I'm not sure you'd really see a lot of gain past that. Maybe with XP, though.

What brands of PC should I avoid (the existing desktop is a P3 933 MhZ H-P Pavilion)?

I really like the PowerSpec and dislike Gateway, Dell, Compaq, etc. It's because the PowerSpec doesn't use a proprietary layout or parts. You can later replace or upgrade anything in the machine for a reasonable cost, right on down to the motherboard.

Is it possible to network the two PC's together if I have one running ME and the other running XP?

I've never used ME, so don't know anything about it, but I'm 99% sure you can. Even 95 had network stuff built right in. I'm networking between XP and 2K right now. XP is far easier to set up for networking, too.

I'm glad I got 512mb. XP seems to take advantage of the extra ram very well. Even in office applications, XP runs noticeably faster than Win98, which I have set as a dual boot. I think the speed gain is due the ram management. Graphic applications should see an even more dramatic difference.
