in fact, most currency trashings have been associated with economic collapse - they were the effect, not the cause. the though of voluntarily trashing one's own currency IS rather perverse, and i believe the BoJ is actually resisting such calls. the BoJ is the butt of much criticism, but i happen to think that Hayami has correctly realized that what his CB is supposed to achieve CAN'T be achieved by it. printing money, contrary to the monetarist rumor, does not create wealth.
