Re: Northwood will get all the premium $$$ Intel needs

Don't be too sure. The mobile market is as large as AMD's entire unit production, and has higher ASPs than the desktop market.

P4 is a poor core for mobile use, and AMD finally has a premium mobile chipset available from VIA - and may soon have a second one from NVidia.

Buyers have been getting more resistant to playing Intel's sucker by paying 50% more for 10% more CPU speed yielding 5% greater overall performance on the desktop.

AMD will be shipping its Athlon XP 2000+ when Northwood ships. Intel's desktop premium may well continue to erode, rather than stabilizing or improving.

AMD, meanwhile, is gaining share in the more profitable SMP and mobile segments, which should let it maintain or improve its overall ASPs.
