indeed...and he is roundly despised and ridiculed, even accused of deliberately depressing the economy.

that by itself proves that he's the right man for the post. the "pro-active, asymmetrical response, moral hazard" policies of the Fed that the market favors so much now are by contrast a clear departure from what a central bank should do.
