The idea that stocks must go up because there is a lot of cash on the sidelines is a bunch of Wall Street BS. Look at Japan. They have much more "cash on the sidelines" relative to market cap than we do. But their market keeps sinking regardless.

Why do you think the Japanese have kept their money out of the stock market? Had they invested it during any time in the last 10 years they would have lost everything. The point isn't to invest in the stock market just because you have the money. The question is: "Is the stock market the best place to invest your money right now?". And the answer is NO! Not until the excesses are gone, valuations are back to normal levels AND!! the economy shows signs of sustained recovery. Unless all of the above happen, investing in the stock market right now is a sure way to lose all your money.
