To put it more simply. The political path chosen by gorby that undermined by appearance the military control of the country would lead to the collapse. Who would believe that a leader of another country was really following a path that would lead to collapse. What was gorby's real agenda, Gorby was suspect. The unpredictable instability could lead to many paths. This was very dangerous. Gorby was doing things that made the Soviet Union unstable. Again remember the failed coup. Gorby was the first leader of the Soviet Union who did not understand the power structure of the Soviet Union. In this area gorby was a duuhhhhh and that was not really believed until the coup. Why would anyone believe that??? The fact that gorby was so dumb about the nature of the control of the Soviet Union is what no one understood or saw. This caused the surprise of the sudden collapse of the Soviet Union. But having a monster defense made very unlikely that the military wackos in the Soviet Union would take over and use a war someplace to distract the population. And in that no-one understood Gorby then extreme caution was the only path to prevent catastrophe. tom watson tosiwmee
