I'm not sure why. Every move has it's leaders and they were the chosen ones. For the markets to truly turn down, those leaders have to stop leading.

One reason they were so strong is this scenario. As the rally progressed, short sellers were attracted to this group because of their strength. When they did not retreat, people covered forcing them even higher and attracting more short sellers. The process kept repeating itself.
