I think you are. You hit two opposite corners of
board spectrum. ASUS does his own board development,
understands well all tracing/grounding/powerplanes issues,
and does not talk to AMD at all, AFAIK. At least the
K7M was not following AMD's reference designs,
and for the good<g>.

MSI, in contrast, was/is the prime AMD "partner" in the
Athlon bring-up process. They follow AMD reference
to the detail. Why their boards work, I don't know:-).

I had an unstable Duron system but it turns out the instability was due to a bad USB mouse. I was surprised that when I replaced the mouse the system became much more reliable. Not quite rock solid but more reliable then most Windows 95 or 98 systems that I have used.
