You haven't been paying attention to Dan and co. AMD is the king. Intel is the 25 billion dollar serf.

The only reason why AMD considers Intel to be their "only" competitor is because of the ego of Jerry Sanders. Once he retires, AMD may feel free to move into other markets - maybe restart their communications business, or get back into the embedded market. Intel would only be one of their competitors, and this diversification could make AMD a stronger company overall.
