ATi's P4 notebook chipset gets Gigabyte support

'Not competing with others'
By Mike Magee, 14/12/2001 12:58:04 BST

A REPORT ON THE Digitimes Taiwanese wire said ATi's integrated Pentium 4 chipset will arrive in Q1 of next year.
The A4, which uses the Radeon core, will initially be aimed at the notebook and game markets, as reported here earlier.

Major motherboard manufacturer Gigabyte appears to be interested in using the chipset, the wire reports.

ATi, which has a licence from Intel for the Pentium 4 architecture, will support DDR (double data rate) memory, but the report said it does not intend to compete with other chipset players in this marketplace.

It's difficult to see how it won't be able to avoid competing with other chipset manufacturers, however. µ

Dan, why don't we spend some time discussing how McKinley might not be suitable for thin notebooks?????

I'm just noodlin' here but Intel has this market segmentation thing going.

Dan, <Enhanced SpeedStep also includes an intermediate mode, where the chip can scale up and down in clock speed to meet a person's demands.>

Sounds like AMD's PowerNow to me, doesn't it? ;-)
