your own business
You should have bet, then I would have won. I had a business for a year around 1977 in which I sold a substituted ROM for the Commodore PET computers so that BASIC programs would list out in a Pseudo-Spanish version of Basic. (I substituted the token expansion with Spanish like words for each of the english ones). The idea was to sell PETs throughout Central/South America. The Pet did not turn out to be as popular as the later Apple computer and when the venture people noticed that my business plan was generally based on copying most of the software with just a bit of modification from the ROMs created by a little company called Microsoft, they turned down my idea and I went back to working on other people's computers. I made a little money writing articles for the magazines of the day, but kept the lights on by working on a crew that built golf course greens.
