Re:"the point is that in 1 year they went from being deeply in debt and almost ready for chapter 11 to having their debt reduced drastically and over $1B in cash."

You totally ignore to major factors. AMD collected over $1 billion selling its PLD and comm groups.

Second, AMD converted much of its debt to stock under the terms of its debt, using dilution of the existing shareholder interests to pay off debt. Of course in short order, the stock price was cut in half and the former debt holders and all the other shareholders were screwed.

Of course Where's Mine Jerry made out just fine because he had sold his stock at the high water mark after pumping up the price with optimistic projections.

Grub - Re: "ok you are allowed to nitpick my statement but the point is that in 1 year they went from being deeply in debt and almost ready for chapter 11 to having their debt reduced drastically and over $1B in cash. So my point is that the CPU market can be very lucrative and 1 good year can make up for a few bad ones. Now, if you have many good ones in a row you end up like Intel with many $billions in the bank. "

Yes. Intel has had MANY good years in a row - and Intel is Intel. Even in a BAD year - such as 2001 - Intel is PROFITABLE !

AMD had one good year in a row !!

ONE !

And prior to that they lost money in 5 out of 6 years.

And after that year, AMD lost money.

Which proves one point: AMD is AMD, and Intel is Intel.
