Post says TVX Gold gets mining go-ahead in Greece

Mon 17 Dec 2001

The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that TVX Gold has
resolved a dispute with Greek government officials and has resumed
operations at its Stratoni mine. The Post's Drew Hasselback writes that
earlier this month the company declared force majeure at its Stratoni mine
after a local mining inspector ordered a suspension of operations. TVX says
the suspension has now been lifted and the Greek government has promised a
decision on whether the company can expand the mine. While TVX had hoped
for a decision by the end of last month, the government now says it will
respond to the company's application by Feb. 8. TVX has spent more than
$250-million (U.S.) to develop its Greek assets. The company has had
difficulty winning governmental support for its operations. It is still
waiting to hear whether it can restart the mothballed Olympias gold, lead,
silver and zinc mine located about 10 kilometres from the Stratoni mine.
The country's top administrative court is considering whether TVX holds
valid permits to mine at Olympias.
