Hewlett-Packard Employees Show Support for Compaq Bid, WSJ Says
By Claire Shoesmith

Palo Alto, California, Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Hewlett-Packard Co.'s employees show growing support for the second-biggest computer maker's bid for Compaq Computer Corp., the Wall Street Journal reported, citing an internal company survey.

Chief Executive Carly Fiorina has also received e-mail messages backing the merger from people such as Papken Der Torossian, Silicon Valley Group Inc.'s former chief executive, the paper said. Still, Fiorina needs to ensure that support carries greater weight than the opposition, which is led by Walter Hewlett, son of co-founder William Hewlett, the WSJ said.

Supporters of the bid, who say Hewlett-Packard needs to lessen its reliance on printers and ink cartridges, argue that buying Compaq would expand the company's product range and help it to compete with International Business Machines Corp., the paper said.

Compaq's co-founder Joseph Canion has also pledged his support for the company's sale to Hewlett-Packard, the Journal said.
