Unregulated, non-transparent energy "free market" = Enron. LOL

Short term price controls can be useful where markets are manipulated by players exercising coordinated and even non-coordinated market power. They've worked in California. The problems stopped when the incentive and ability to game the market was removed. Oh, and when the Senate threatened to shine the light a little brighter on those buggers too. The longer term answer is better regulatory controls preventing abuse, within a market pricing system that isn't handed over lock, stock, and barrel to the kilowatt cowboys. And more effort towards development of cost effective and feasible alternatives, such as hybrid electric/gas automobiles and cogeneration.
