Some spectacular vacation deals available these days, 5 star hotels, trips down the Nile etc etc, you just have to risk your neck a little -g-] arabicnews.com Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has warned that escalation by Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon against the Palestinians would drag the Middle East "into a catastrophe" which would threaten the interests of all major countries in the region. Mubarak made the statements in an interview with Samir Ragab, the Board Chairman of Al-Tahrir Publishing and Printing House and Editor-in-Chief of Al Gomhuria daily and Mayo weekly newspapers. The Egyptian leader said that Palestinian President Yasser Arafat was the only leader capable of representing the Palestinian people. He was commenting on Israel's decision late Wednesday to break off contacts with Palestinian Authority and dismiss Arafat as irrelevant. During the interview, to be fully published tomorrow, Mubarak also tackled domestic issues. Mubarak noted that the Egyptian economy is in good shape, despite the aftermath of the September 11 attacks in the United States. He added that bad spending habits posed a threat to the hard currency reserves in Egypt. Egyptians who insist on spending their holidays abroad and ignore Egypt's tourism potentials unintentionally damage the national economy, he said. The Egyptian leader, also the chief of the majority National Democratic Party (NDP), said that continuous changes are being carried out within the party to improve its performance and enhance its contacts with the public. He called on other political parties to follow suit and improve their performance to enrich the political life in Egypt. In exclusive statements to Al Gomhuria, Mubarak said that the bystander's stance adopted by the international community was adding to the outrage felt by the Arabs and Muslims over the vicious Israeli attacks on the Palestinians. "But the nation will not lose confidence in itself or in its capability to change the reality and impose peace," he added. He was speaking on the occasion of the Muslim Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of the holy fast month of Ramadan.
