Len, the thought process of Authoritarians like Ashcroft goes something like this:

- Citizens work for the government & answer to government officials.

- Government and military actions should be kept secret. Citizens can't be trusted to know what their gov't and military is up to.

- In the Information Age, the greatest power is the Power to Keep Secrets - this is the Administration's greatest Authority.

- Therefore, all information must be classified as "sensitive" or "National Security", regardless whether it has any bona-fide military value (99% does not); and it must be modified or destroyed if necessary, and wrongdoers threatened with imprisionment or death by Presidential Tribunal (since, after all, any evidence of wrongdoing by Administration officials past or present would reduce "confidence", and be aiding the terrorists -- i.e., say nice things or we'll kill you).

- Lying to Congress is ok, as is lying to the media.

- It's the responsibility of the Authoritarians to continuously create new laws to prevent Citizens from being involved, since they are so fiendishly clever with their damn Internet ...
