that is pretty much equivalent to controlling standards, IMHO. If player a controls the standards and player b does not have free access to those then player b is not a viable alternative.

Intel actually gambled quite a bit, IMHO, by cutting AMD off from the infrastructure (post-Socket7) - and it seems their gamble may well fail.

Good point. It looks like AMD is stronger now, that they control their destiny with the chipsets. Intel gambled that forcing to develop it's own infrastructure would kill AMD.

AMD went half way, "borrowing" the bus from Digital, and next, with HT, AMD will be fully independent, and actually, the new standard has a pretty good following, which will reduce cost and increase flexibility. This is slowly turning AMD from cloner/follower to leader
