Nah. Total flight distance is about 89,200 miles, which works out to half a second just in flight time. If I remember right, the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second (meaning the light we see from the sun is about 8 minutes old. For all we know, it blew up 5 minutes ago).

Looks like 479ms just for travel time.

On sites like SI, where you're used to slow responses, it's really not noticeable.

But it'd be useless for realtime video chat, very active multiplayer games, and is really pretty painful downloading email if you've got hundreds to get. It spends more time sending commands back and forth for each message than it does actually downloading each one.

Edit: I just pinged SI 100 times and I got the following ping results:

Minimum: 750ms
Maximum: 2496ms
Average: 1133ms

Just did the same to my best friend's machine and got:

Minimum: 751ms
Maximum: 1838ms
Average: 1007ms

Just for grins, I attached to my best friend's machine via Terminal Services (he's got a cablemodem), pinged SI 100 times and got:

Minimum: 50ms
Maximum: 90ms
Average: 58ms
