Well, I guess you could distinguish between an individual's life and and an individual's "independent" life. In that case, conception would be the start of an individual's life and birth would be the start of the individual's "independent" life. I am trying to think of a better word than independent, since, obviously a newborn is not yet independent, but does not need to be taking nutrients directly from the mother's body to survive. I'm sure there is a medical term to describe what I'm saying. Does anyone know it?
