They created a country that did not establish a national church, and that did not allow religious tests for the holding of federal offices. That does make it a religionless country, nor does it mean that the "wall of separation" model was held by most of the Founders, or that it was prevalent throughout most of our history. Until '62, after all, prayer was still allowed in public schools as part of the morning exercises, and the Senate still has a chaplain. The way most historians characterize it is that no particular denomination was favored, but a sort of "Judaeo- Christian" civic religion grew up to solemnize public life, until that too came under attack in the last few decades......
