I did see it prior to "Manon of the Spring." I have never considered a sequel movie to be better than its predicessor until this one. Well, actually they have to be combined for the full effect.

Are you sure "Jean de Florette" was a prequel? I have not seen either but this site says that "Manon of the Spring" was a sequel to Jean de Florette"
