Hi Jim,

MMDS is 'just sleeping' - it is beachfront real estate. But the 700MHz auction and the 'taking' of all UHF channels above channel 52 precede it. So much of the spectrum below 2GHz is tied up in archaic modulations. The ITU-R is showing little interest in terminating analog modulations (or selecting a single digital modulation) to provide services over IP ;-)

What comes after OFDM? MIMO-OFDM? OFDM-CDMA? Synchronized OFDM from a plurality of sources (5UP)?

100% of urban environments have copper pairs, and were the juciest targets for LMDS/CellularVision. Also the lowest cost for the ILECs to defend.

Fiber vs LMDS - in 1996 HP was framing LMDS as the way to distribute TV from telephone poles to neighborhoods. Backhaul costs drove microcellular system deployment. Still do.
