LGE's new models - CX-400K and LG-SD1000 - boast 65,536 colors (256 x 256), the highest resolution so far in the domestic market where 256 color models are the norm. "Compared with existing STN LCD models, the new handsets support better color features that could appeal to wireless multimedia content users," LGE said in a statement. The two models, which will hit the market later this month, have adopted a 16 polyphony ring tone system, while sporting a call-ready time of up to 170 hours. Its outside screen is placed horizontally, allowing users to check SMS (short messaging service) easily without flipping open the dual- folder models. LGE said its chic design and upscale material are designed to attract those in their 20s and 30s, who tend to follow the latest trends eagerly. The company's foray into the high-color model came as it tried to catch up with the market frontrunner, Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics started to sell its latest models SCH-X230 and SCH-X250 equipped with the largest LCD and 16 polyphone ring tones in October. The new handsets adopted 13-line color LCD, as well as a high-speed wireless Internet connection of up to 144 Kpbs. The mobile handsets' applicability has been significantly expanded as the phones are installed with the n.Top function, a mobile Internet service provided by SK Telecom, Korea's largest mobile carrier. Priced at 600,000 won, Samsung models are equipped with 256-color STN-LCD. Samsung has carved out a 55 percent share in the color-screen mobile handset market, since it released its first color handsets in July. LGE, however, played down the initial positioning, saying that the color-screen market will take shape in 2002. LGE plans to introduce 260,000 color TFT-LCD models armed with a 32 polyphony bell sound system in the first half of next year, in a bid to challenge Samsung's leading position. It said it expects to sell 2.8 million color-screen models, or a 35 percent market share, in the domestic color-screen handset market estimated to reach 8.2 million units in 2002. The total handset market in Korea is estimated at 12 million units next year. << - Eric -
