Ottawa invests $4.4M in voice technology firm
Canada (12/17/2001 - 18:52)

VANCOUVER (CP) -- The federal government is investing $4.4 million dollars in a Vancouver firm that's trying to improve computer voice recognition technology.

The investment in the firm Wavemakers could dramatically change the way people interact with computers and many other devices, from toasters to cars.

Environment Minister David Anderson admitted the investment is a gamble for the government, but said that's what new products are all about.

"We think we would forever be picking up somebody else's technology if we left it to the market. We want to move up to the top rank of OECD countries in terms of (research and development) and we're not there yet," Anderson said.

Wavemakers' software is being designed to separate voice from everyday noise.

"The human brain performs this task seamlessly, however, even the most sophisticated voice recognition systems have been thwarted by interfering noise and overlapping voice information," the company said in a news release.

The technology is expected to be available in vehicles within the next year.

The money is a loan to Wavemakers and will be paid back to the federal government through royalties on sales of the software.

Hi Harry:

As long as ng stays above $2 the ng companies like dvn will do fine BUT we did have a drop below $2 a few weeks back & I bet that started some shut downs. Add in the ENE issues impacting credit / liquidity in the area and this space will be under pressure for a while.

PXLW as a long candidate. stochastic is oversold after being nailed in the overbought region for most of november. typically a visit to the oversold marker after having been overbought for this long a period of time represents a timely opportunity to go long. the 13-day EMA has held for the uptrend since the beginning of november. so we look for it to hold here. action on the VIG deamed positive as blue dominates.
